Brothers purchase PODS, hit the ground running with community, charity support
What began as a casual conversation over dinner developed into a new business venture for brothers, David and Ken Kocon. Two years later, in 2010, the Kocon brothers purchased the Lexington, Ky. PODS franchise and now offer a full range of moving and storage options to the entire Lexington Bluegrass region.
"When I heard about PODS, I immediately told my brother, Ken, about the company" said David Kocon. Ken Kocon, who has over 20 years experience in logistics, transportation and fleet management, was enthused and the two brothers set out to find out more about the company. "We discovered a business idea that made total sense to the both of us and decided then and there we wanted to become PODS owners," said David Kocon. "It was purely a lucky twist of fate that the PODS Lexington franchise came on the market not long afterward."
The franchise, which opened in 2004, is the leading provider of portable storage and moving services to individuals and businesses in the Lexington area. PODS customers can fill a PODS container at their own pace and either store it on site, secure it at the PODS Lexington climate-controlled storage center or move it across town or across the country.
"Everyone who is introduced to PODS says ´I wish I had thought of that,´" said Ken Kocon. "The flexibility of PODS helps alleviate much of the stress that goes along with moving."
The Kocon brothers are excited about their new business venture. "We continually say to one another that the potential uses of PODS containers are constrained only by our imaginations," said David Kocon.
The Kocon brothers plan to support charitable and community efforts by donating PODS containers to worthy organizations and nonprofits. "We feel fortunate to be in a position to help," said David Kocon. "PODS are very useful and have a ton of applications for community events, festivals and charities. We feel strongly about supporting our community."
For example, this spring the brothers supported the Kentucky Wine & Vine Festival with the donation of PODS containers that organizers used to safely transport various event materials and equipment, including wine glasses, back and forth to the festival site. Using the PODS saved the organizers and their volunteers a significant amount of time and energy. The Kocons are currently talking with local churches, schools and charities about the possibility of helping with their storage needs.
